Kathak is the major classical dance form of northern India. It was derived from the dance dramas of ancient India. When the support shifted from the temples to the royal court, there was a change in the overall importance. Today, the dance is mainly a theoretical study of rhythm and movement.
Kathak is not only popular in India but all over the world. It is known as one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It is describe by an amalgamation of the temple and court forms, including both the devotion and romantic form. Elegant turning, balanced stances, technical clarity, hand gestures also known as mudras and face expression are important components of modern Kathak.
People performing Kathak are supposed to wear traditional costume consisting of a sari tied up to allow greater freedom of movement during dance. Underneath the legs are covered by the chudidaar giving the look of cloth bangles. Accessories wore while performing Kathak is a small bindi; a belt made of zari or precious stones is also worn on the waist.The traditional Hindu costume for men is bare-chested and below the waist is the dhoti.
